DIY: Naturlige julekranser

Automated Home’s Take

Er. Dette. Endelig. De. En?

Who knows, there have been so many false starts before with a number of that looked promising. however there are some significant names right here as well as more significantly powerful rivals coming together to working on the problem. The truth that the house automation market is admitting it has an problem as well as these huge players are coming together has to be a great sign.

It will be a while before we understand exactly how enthusiastic each celebration is though, as a draft specification as well as a “preliminary recommendation open source implementation” won’t be right here up until late 2020. That very first spec will include…

The goal of the very first specification release will be Wi-Fi, as much as as well as including 802.11ax (aka Wi-Fi 6), that is 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax; thread over 802.15.4-2006 at 2.4 GHz; as well as IP implementations for Bluetooth low Energy, versions 4.1, 4.2, as well as 5.0 for the network as well as physical wireless protocols.

So, has ZigBee just ended up being the selected one? What does this mean for Z-Wave?  What about other business outside the group that are establishing wise tech? What about backwards compatibility with all our tradition systems?

More concerns than answers at this point. So is this job X that I composed about 12 years ago? I’m a tech optimist at heart so I truly do hope so.

Here’s Apple’s full press release plus link to the job below…

DIY Weathered FlowerPots for Spring Blooms

Barclays study supplies Insights on Attitudes to UK smart home tech

Back in 2015 Barclays Mortgages commissioned a study on the top technology that attracts homebuyers. earlier this year they partnered with YouGov for a follow-up survey on attitudes to the smart home. some of its findings are pretty surprising.

The battle for the smart Home

There are absolutely some wins for the home tech industry in the current research, for example there are now fewer people who claim not to understand what a smart home is…

Only 22% of UK homeowners surveyed in 2017 claim they’ve heard of smart home technology but don’t really understand what it means, compared to 33% in 2015.

This shows a respectable swing in the comprehension of the concepts around the smart home and can probably be attributed to the amount of marketing in the market over the last couple of years.

Anyone shopping on-line or in their local electrical super-shed can’t have failed to notice the raft of home tech that has crept in over the past half-decade or so. WiFi light bulbs, home IP CCTV cameras and smart thermostats that all pledge a utopian lifestyle.

How lots of of us actually use smart home Tech?

So then, what would you guess is the actual percentage of owners using this technology in their own homes?

The report also shows that uptake is surprisingly low, with just over 1 in 10 (13%) of UK homeowners claiming to currently use smart home technology in their home.

I think that’s probably not far off what I would have guessed, and if anything it’s maybe a little higher (I’d probably have guessed around 5% to 10%).

Og resten?

So how do we get the other 87% of the population on board? Well It’s not good news for the home tech industry this time. It seems an boosted understanding doesn’t automatically translate to an boosted lust for the products.

In fact the 2017 survey shows that the appeal of all this smart technology is lost on many. It seems there’s been a significant rise in the proportion of people who have no interest in installing the tech in any way in their own home.

Over twice as lots of UK homeowners in 2017 (30%) expressing no interest in installing connected or smart home technology in the future, compared to 12 per cent in 2015.

Pinning Down the Reasons

This one is harder to explain. have people had bad experiences with early versions of the tech and made a decision that a smart home is not for them? lets face it, there have been plenty of poorly carried out new products and failed (crowd funded) startups.

The Barclays surveys points to another reason that may be the single greatest issue that’s putting potential customers off.

63% of UK adults asked expressing worry around cyber crime related to smart home technologies

Certainly the a lot more ‘Internet of Things’ devices we add to our homes the a lot more we open ourselves to the risks associated with hacking and cyber crime.

This year saw the worlds greatest DDoS attack when various IoT devices were hacked to be used to build a huge botnet. worry is growing and a lot of normal home owners or renters have neither the ability, interest, time or inclination to spend their Saturday nights updating firmware or troubleshooting the safety issues of hardware around their homes. and who can blame them.

It’s time for the smart home industry to clean up its act in this area.

The need for Speed

Perhaps unsurprisingly the most popular form of home technology is super-fast fibre optic broadband.

Of the smart home technologies provided in the survey, fibre optic broadband verified the most popular, with 32% of UK adults saying they would be interested in installing the technology

I’m surprised it’s not a higher proportion to be sincere and I imagine this number will only climb rapidly in the future as a lot more and a lot more of our communications, shopping and enjoyment counts on our Internet connection.

The Regions

Northern Ireland leads the way on interest in Solar PV renewable energy.

Northern Ireland is strongest when it pertains to solar panel uptake, with 44% of adults there interested in installing them in the future – 46% above the national average.

For general smart home uptake, the top regions are the North West and east Midlands.

The North West and east Midlands of England have the highest uptake rate of all UK regions.

And it’s Scotland that’s leading the way on overall awareness.

Nearly a quarter (24%) of those surveyed there said they’ve heard of smart home technology and fully understand what it means

Fremtiden

The final word comes from Craig Calder, director of Barclays Mortgages, and supplies an insight into the range of budgets and the need for technology that supply a genuinely better user experience, and is not just there for the sake of the technology.

“Our previous 2015 smart home report stated that on average, UK homeowners who would spend a lot more would be ready to pay an extra £3,310 for a new home that comes fully equipped wiTH den nåværende teknologien, for eksempel smarte varmesystemer og apparater. ”

In Photos: My EV-tastic Day trip to the 2019 Geneva motor show

A bit of break from home automation for you this week, as a couple of mates and I visited the Geneva motor show over the weekend. and with a silly-o-clock start it is doable as a day-trip from Belfast.

We drove to the airport in the Leaf, but that probably didn’t quite off-set our dirty air journey. The flight out took just 1 hour and 40 minutes and we touched down in Switzerland at 8am (9am local time) after we were treated to a stunning approach along Lake Geneva with the Alps as a snowy backdrop.

The Palexpo exhibition centre is just a 10 minute walk from the arrivals hall at the airport and is made up of a series of substantial halls that host the event.

We did this same trip three years ago, but this time it was incredible how many more EVs there were, and not just the ones from the unheard of startups either, the mainstream motoring manufacturers have now all turned up with electric automobiles too.

Polestar 2

This years show had been billed as a bit of an EV-fest by much of the motoring press, and they weren’t wrong. one of the highlights for me was the amazing new Polestar 2, a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo owned brand. It’s available to pre-order now at €59K and there’s a €39K version promised a year into production which will make it perhaps the closest rival to the Tesla model 3.

Tesla model 3

Although Tesla didn’t have a stand at the show, there was a model 3 on display at one of the charging equipments stands. This was the first time I’d seen the automobile in the flesh and I can confirm the oft quoted experience that it does indeed look even better in real life. Roll on right hand drive production.

Honda e

Honda have promised you’ll be able to order their uber amazing 5-door ‘e’ later in 2019, although you’ll probably have to wait until 2020 to actually take delivery. They’ve aimed it very much at the urban market with a 120 mile range and a price that the pundits predict will be between £25K to £30K.

Peugeot e-208

Another head turner was the new Peugeot e-208. It’s another mouth watering prospect that will bring a 200 mile range in a handsome super-mini package.

In fact the Peugeot stand in general was very cool, especially this stunning e-legend concept car. despite those amazing lines it doesn’t look like it will see production though.

Kia e-Niro

While Hyundai were not at the show Kia were and we had the opportunity to get our fist look around the e-Niro. This is the EV that shares a platform with the popular Kona and while it’s not as pretty as it’s little sister, some people may find this larger automobile more practical. Hopefully Hyundai can ramp up production of this near-300 mile range 64kWh automobile so the waiting list can come down.

The new Kia soul was on the stand too and we love it. perhaps this new version will be the one that can make the electric version as popular in the UK as the petrol version is in the USA.

Seat el-Born

Another of my favourite automobiles in the ‘actually being made, could even be affordable’ category is the Seat el-Born. This is being built on the same MEB platform as the VW I.D. which was strangely absent from the show despite reportedly being available to pre-oder from this May. The Seat is scheduled for arrival in the first half of 2020 with 62kWh battery and around 261miles of range.

The Seat Minimo is like a Renault Twizy with proper windows. amazing idea and all, but it’s probably more of an alternative for moped owners living in the South of France, than leaf drivers from Belfast. Still, it was a head turner.

Audi e-tron GT & Q4 e-tron

Sticking with the VW Group, the Audi stand was headed down the EV route too. The e-tron GT is Audi’s version of the Porsche Taycan (another EV that was conspicuously absent from the show).

The Q4 e-tron concept is a smaller version of Audi’s first EV that’s named simply ‘e-tron’ (confused yet?). This mid-sized crossover is confirmed for a late 2020 arrival.

Mercedes EQC

Mercedes-Benz are entering the battery electric vehicle world with the EQC.  A quality automobile as you’d expect from the three-pointed star (running the MBUX system), but some how a little ordinary. Due at the end of this year.

Mercedes is the parent company of smart and this funky little concept on their stand is called ‘forease’. staff on the stand told us the company is due to stop production of internal combustion powered automobiles in the next few months and switch their focus entirely to EVs.

Tata Altroz

This is a new one on me, the Altroz from India’s Tata Motors. bit reminiscent of a Chevy Bolt, due in 2021.

The new Fiat Panda EV?

Another little modern-retro urban EV, this time from Fiat. The concept is named Centoventi but it looks like this could be a good pointer towards the EV version of the Panda. It even had a little furry toy panda sitting on the front seat, just to tease us.

EV Supercars & Hypercars

THE World of Supercars and Hypercars flytter raskt til alle elektriske.

Automated house 2.0 – #24 Ubiquiti Networking part 3 – airMAX NanoStation AC loco Wireless Network Bridge

Although there’s fibre in our neighbourhood, the splitters on the poles around us are currently maxed out and we have to wait on them to be upgraded. So sadly no Fibre to the facilities for us moving in.

Ubiquiti to the Rescue

There are a couple of choices for our connection in the meantime though. very first there’s the 3G/4G/5G cellular network and this choice is currently bringing delight to numerous rural house owners around the country. Speeds of 50Mbps are typically attainable and I’ve heard of 150Mbps for some individuals with EE 5G sims. limitless data sim contracts are available from around £20 / month these days.

But with household next door with an FTTP connection, we’re going for choice 2 – a wireless bridge to our neighbours. We spoke with our buddies at Linitx and asked about the very best Ubiquiti units to utilize and on their recommendations purchased up a set of these NanoStation Loco units (Loco5AC).

Setup & Installation

Setup was quick and painless. We set the units up on the bench and after configuring our switch to Passive 24v PoE we booted them one each time and browsed to their web interface (default IP 192.168.1.20) and then…

Updated to the most recent firmware
Set static IPs
Setup the link SSID and Password
Set the one on the neighbours home to ‘Access Point’.

Remember that PTZ cam we installed at the extremely begin of the build? Well it’s time for it to find down now and relocation onto the new house. So now that PoE cord we ran for it implies we can just switch it to the NanoStation ‘Access Point‘, cord tie it to the pole and plug it in – you’ll requirement a 24v Passive PoE injector (the NS-5AC version includes 2 PoE ports which we might have utilized right here if the cam was staying).

During the build 3 separate Cat6 cable televisions were run to the West side of the home (that faces this AP) to provide us choices for IP CCTV locations. So we’re utilizing one of them in the meantime to link to the ‘Station‘ unit. this is powered from our 48 port UniFi PoE switch.

Link Speed

These NanoStations have a developed in devoted Wi-Fi Radio for administration which implies you can link to them within 15 minutes of a power cycle and configure them from the Ubiquiti Network administration System UNMS app (Android Play store or iOS app Store).

This is a fantastic function and the app includes an antenna positioning tool which utilizes audio tones to assist you line up the pair without having to gaze at your phone at the exact same time.

These P2P units are appropriate for outside (or indoor) and offer “up to 450+ Mbps”.

The distance between the 2 buildings right here is around 20 metres and we’re getting a tad over 300Mbps, which is fantastic thinking about the Web connection we’re bringing across is well below that at 70Mbps.

Whilst we’ve not had any rough weather condition because the units were installed, we have had lots of rainy days and haven’t discovered any degradation in performance.

Sammendrag

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Beaming a WiFi signal between buildings isn’t just something for the Enterprise. If you want to share a neighbours fibre or just send a network connection down to the garden shed, it’s never been simpler or much more affordable. The airMAX NanoStation AC loco provides Ubiquiti’s typical ratio of high function count to low cost. extremely recommended.

Available from Linitx : available from AmazonLinitx also offer this set with 2 units and injectors all prepared to go.

Lynda Reeves’ Hudson Valley Haunts

I’m writing to you from the Hudson Valley in new York State, where I spend as many weekends as I can in an early Dutch stone house built in 1750 that I love. This is the place to write, and cook, do diy projects and just chill…

This weekend my to-do list included learning to bake the remarkable sourdough country bread that I tasted last month at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco. I am right in the middle of making the “sponge” or culture. next blog I will share my results and the recipe that I’m using. I’ll also include the recipe for homemade flatbread or naan that is so easy you’ll make it often.

But for now I want to share four favourite places to eat and shop in the town of Rhinebeck, new York. Every weekend I spend here, my first stop in Rhinebeck is to eat at Market St. I love their kale salad and in fact H&H got the recipe from their chef and published it in our February 2014 issue. Det er fantastisk. I make it every few days and everyone I serve it to asks for the recipe.

Market St.’s Kale Salad With Pecorino, Currants & pine Nuts

Ingredients:

My second stop is Hammertown Home. They do a good job of bringing in lines of furniture and bedding and accessories that are easy to mix and have a laid-back, classic charm.

This trip I saw a few new things that caught my eye.

Blue and white accent dishes were stacked high.

I spotted this leather-framed mirror and skinny steel bookcase (I measured them and went home to confirm the fit). I ended up buying both. They worked perfectly!

I loved this kit of slate placecards with chalk and dowels. The price was great at under $30.00 so I bought it.

I also bought these bottlestoppers with decorative wood finials — perfect for olive oils.

My third stop was Blue Cashew kitchen Pharmacy, a cooking store that always has the latest cookbooks and a great selection of linens, cookware and tableware.

They carry a line of beautiful handmade candles from Ester & Erik that are displayed in the metal racks they are made in. When you buy them, the wicks are clipped to release the candles. veldig kult!

The best thing is the personal service you will enjoy from the owners that includes sharing their own favourite recipes from their website. I’ve made the seafood paella, it’s superb!

Last stop this trip was Paper Trail, the card and gift shop with wonderful accessories including coverlets from John Robshaw, scarves and candles in the newest colours, decorative throw pillows, loads of stationary and clever gifty things.

That’s all for this trip. keep the Hudson Valley in mind the next time you’re planning a weekend getaway!

Skapene går noe over kaffebaren tilbake for å aktivere mye mer hodeområde.
